We know that when they start talking about changes to your home care, it can feel a bit like, “Oh dear, what’s going on now?”. With this new Support at Home program, we’re hoping it will bring more clarity and simplicity to the current aged care system. This program aims to offer some promising benefits as opposed to the current aged care system.
Let’s take a closer look at the main benefits and how this program is designed to better support you and your family as you navigate your care journey.
1. More Funds
Think of it this way: the new system has made more room for different levels of care, and that means there’s potentially more financial support available to you. The maximum amount of funding each year for help at home is going up from around $61,000 to $78,000. This increase means that more people – around 1.4 million, in fact – will have access to the support they truly need.
2. Quality care from registered care provider
It’s important to know that you’ll be receiving high-quality, personal care from providers who are officially registered. This gives you the reassurance that you’re in good hands and getting the best possible support. These registered providers will also offer care management services, which means they’ll help you get the most out of the Support at Home program to achieve the best possible outcomes for your well-being.
3. Reduced wait times
We know that waiting for funding approval can be a real headache – sometimes taking six months, a year, or even longer! That’s just not right. This new program aims to speed things up considerably. The goal is to have funding assigned within just three months of approval by July 2027. We certainly hope this becomes a reality for everyone!
Did you know?
Around 1.4 million older people will benefit from the new Support at Home program, which prioritises supported and independent ageing, with an additional 300,000 people expected to be supported by 2034–35.
4. Better access to preventive support
This program makes it easier to get preventative support. What that means is, there will be upfront funding available for things like walking aids or making changes to your home to make it safer and more accessible. You won’t have to try and save up your individual budget to get essential items such as: A little extra help getting around with a walking stick or frame, or Having a sturdy rail put in the shower to prevent falls.
5. A New Pathway to End-of-Life Care at Home
This is a sensitive topic, but it’s important to know that there will be a new pathway providing up to $25,000 over three months for older adults who sadly have less than three months to live. This will allow them to spend their final days with dignity and comfort in their own home, surrounded by loved ones.
